How to Get Your Documents Certified
In South Africa, "Certified Copies" are a non-negotiable part of the government application bundle.
Where to go
- SAPS Police Stations: Usually the fastest and free of charge.
- Post Offices: Often charge a small fee per page.
- Banks: Your personal banker can often certify documents.
- Courts: Commissioners of Oaths at Magistrate Courts.
- Law Offices: Any practicing attorney is a Commissioner of Oaths.
The Requirements
The 3-Month Rule
Almost all government departments require that the certification stamp be less than 3 to 6 months old. Check the specific advert for their "validity period."
Originals Present
You must take the original documents with you. A Commissioner of Oaths cannot legally certify a copy of a copy.
Clear Stamps
Ensure the stamp is legible, includes the date, and the signature of the commissioner. If the stamp is faded, HR may reject it as "unverifiable."
